She arrived at the same cave by the shore, once, at times twice a week.
She’d swim a little closer to shore …each time.
Lovers holding hands, lovers kissing passionately, lovers holding each other after a swim in her waters…
She was memorized by it.
She didn’t understand it, but she wanted a taste of it, she needed it for her own, without understanding it…
She would swim away, deep under water, she’d swim with whales, leaping high above the waves, racing with dolphins, listening to the wise tales of 100 year old turtles…she would reach the artic in the springtime to see the Penguins’ dance …
Somehow she’d end up at the same cave, by that beach, where she saw lovers, young and old, she believed she needed that, that which she saw and didn’t understand….somehow it was missing in her life.
One of the many days, the one time she reached the closest to the shore there were no lovers, no one on that day, it was raining, thunder, the waves crashed and pulled her to the shore, she was on the beach, there, a shadow appeared, she was frozen with curiosity.
“I have seen you, come in to the caves, some days, but not others, I watched you swim away, always wondering where you were off to and if you’d return! I know what you are, I kept it a secret for so long, I wish, here youare, I’ve dreamed of this day since the 1st day I saw you.”
The shadow got close, it was a young man, blue eyes, black hair, tall in stature, broad shoulders, great smile. She felt a feeling she never felt before, the only thing to copare it to was the way she felt when she saw her dolphin family, when she swam fast, faster, fastest. She was memorized, they exchanged stories , and sat in the rain until the moon appeared, until the waves slowed down, until the sky got a little red, until the sun started to rise again.
She had to go, he wanted her to stay.
“Will you return, will I see you again, will I be able to sit here on lovers bay with you again?” He asked, a little worry in his voice.
She didn’t know, she enjoyed every second she spent with him, she loved the way he made her feel, but she missed swimming, freely, wherever she wanted to go, she loved being free, to come back and daydream, she loved escaping back to the sea, her home, her mother, her true love…
There she knew, she knew what the lovers felt, she knew what she had and she knew what she was missing…not a thing… Mermaids can find love, mermaids have love, she saw him again, but didn’t change her ways, didn’t stop swimming…she knew someday maybe she would , but not today, and not anytime soon.
